Is it permissible to do freelancing and outsourcing work?

Q: Is it permissible to do freelancing and outsourcing work?

Answer:

There are thousands of jobs in the world of freelancing or outsourcing. Depending on the work, sometimes it will be legal and sometimes it will be illegal.

The basic principle in this case is that if you do something which is basically halal in Shariah - so that it has no contact with haram then it is halal and the money earned from it is also halal and if the work is haram then it is haraam to do it and the money earned from it is also haram.

Some examples:

- Book cover design. If a picture of a man or a woman or an animal is not included and there is nothing anti-Islamic in the book, then it is halal; Otherwise it is haraam.

- Data entry. If there is nothing against the Shariah, then there is no objection; Otherwise it is haraam. Such as: atheist and anti-Islamic books, or data entry on illicit love and dirty sex.

- Similarly, translation is valid if it does not contain haraam content; Otherwise it is haraam.

- Working as an online based sales representative. If the product is halal then it is halal but if the product is haram then it must be haram.

Allahu alam.
